Parent Consultation

What is Parent Consultation?

Parent Consultation offers parents the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a licensed psychologist trained in child development and psychological principles to discuss a specific question, area of concern, or problem related to their child or adolescent.

How is parent consultation different from individual therapy?

With parent consultation, the parent attends the appointment. The child or adolescent does not meet with the psychologist. The purpose is not to provide a diagnosis or direct treatment to the child or adolescent, but to provide the parent with general guidance or clinically informed strategies to address a particular child or adolescent issue.

What do you typically get from parent consultation?

From parent consultation, parents may leave with a clearer understanding of their child’s behavior and/or emotions, which can help them interact with their child or adolescent more effectively. Parents may learn how to apply specific parenting strategies to manage more challenging behaviors and promote more positive parent-child interactions. Parent consultation may lead to recommendations for an evaluation or a referral for individual therapy for their child or adolescent.

Who is parent consultation meant for?

Parent consultation is an option for parents seeking a short-term relationship with a psychologist trained in child development and psychological principles. Perhaps the parent is looking for an expert to discuss typical child development, for instance, “Is this typical at this age?” or how to implement a specific behavior plan at home, like a bedtime routine, or the parent is seeking general guidance on how to support a child during important transitional stages such as starting kindergarten or entering middle school. Parent consultation is also a great option for parents who are not quite sure if individual therapy is necessary or who are unable to commit to the intensity of therapy at the time. Finally, parent consultation is available to parents who see their child or adolescent struggling and want to support their child, but the child is not ready or reluctant to participate in their own individual therapy.

How frequently do you meet for parent consultation?

The frequency of parent consultation is flexible. It depends on how often the parent wants to utilize it. Consultations can range from one-time, meeting several times in a short period of time, or periodically over the course of the child’s development. It just depends on the consultation goals identified by the parent.

How much does this service cost?

A parent consultation session with a licensed psychologist costs $200 an hour. Since it is a consultation service that does not involve a diagnosis and is not considered treatment, it is not covered by insurance.

Can I receive parent consultation

virtually?
